Lane cutting is a major cause of automobile accidents and one way out of this problem is to install lane guides along the entire stretch of the roads, especially in the cities. The lane guides will have a height of a few inches like the rumblers and should be designed in such a way that it allows vehicles to cross over them for genuine reasons like changing lanes but the height also discourages constant violations of lane discipline by making it very bumpy to frequently change lanes. The lane guides should be made from tough materials that can endure constant vehicular movement over it.

Automated Traffic Halt At Zebra Crossings
A common problem at many traffic signals is that when there are no policemen around, motorists do not halt during the pedestrian green crossing. It is not only hazardous for the pedestrians but a bigger problem for children and senior citizens. An automated solution to this is as follows. At every traffic signal, before the actual crossing line, install a rotary shaft device at ground level that springs up tough sharp pins or blades that will rip and burst the tyres of any offending vehicle that tries to cross it during a red signal. The signal lights are mounted much before this crossing in order to allow the vehicles to slow down nicely to a stop before this 'cut off' line. When the vehicle signal goes green, shaft is rotated and the one sided cam like blades or pins are now under the ground. A long steel plate with continuous slots covers the top of the shaft. The vehicle tyres run smoothly over this plate. During the vehicle stop, the blades come up from inside the slots preventing any violation. After all, no one wants to get their tyres ripped. The whole process is motor operated and runs in sync with the traffic lights.
In order to let emergency vehicles like ambulances pass even at red signals, they can be fitted with secure wireless proximity units that will temporarily put the rotary shaft in 'pass' mode to allow the emergency vehicles to pass.
